M1 Class: 2nd Main Exam = "Contrôle Final" on Dec 14

The 2nd Main Exam = "Contrôle Final" on Dec 14 will last around 75-80 minutes maximum and will cover:

A/ Vocabulary:
 
    1/ Cartoons Coverage
(PBS report)
    2/ WikiLeaks (PBS report)
    3/ Reading comprehension texts: all the texts except "Recovering Damaged Reputation"
    4/ False friends: exercises 1, 2, 3 and 4
    5/ Government and Politics: the whole handout 
    6/ Media vocabulary: the whole handout


B/ Grammar (in translation): Units 26 to 36 included

C/ Reading comprehension: Reading comprehension: there will be an unknown text with questions


D/ Listening comprehension: you will hear extracts only twice from "Cartoons Coverage" and "WikiLeaks" (PBS reports)  and you will have to write a short commentary on these extracts.

REMINDERS:
1/ There will be no catch-up session whatsoever even if you have a valid and sincere justification.

    1/ The Cost of Cotton (BBC)

    2/ Bunker Roy and the Barefoot Movement (TED)
    3/ Listening comprehension recordings (
Air Travel in the USA, Employment, After Graduation, Natural Medecine, History of Dentistry, Archaeology, PC A Practice Test 1)
    4/ False friends:  exercises 1, 2, 3 and 4 (first coulmn ie up to "prejudice" (included))
 

B/ Grammar (in translation):

    1/ Units 26 to 36 included
    2/ Phrasal Verbs: Units 145, 144, 143, 142 and 141

C/ Listening comprehension:

1/ there will be an unknown recording with questions: you will hear it twice: the first time without the questions, which means you will have to take extensive notes while listening, and a second time with the questions.
2/ you will hear extracts only once from "The Cost of Cotton" (BBC),  "Wikipedia at Ten" (BBC), "Bunker Roy and the Barefoot Movement" (TED) and you will have to write a short commentary on these extracts.
REMINDERS:
1/ We must leave the classroom at 4:55 pm maximum as there is a class after our class.

Rafea est la seconde épouse d'un bédouin sans travail. Cette Jordanienne, qui a quitté l'école très tôt, subvient seule à ses besoins et à ceux de ses quatre filles. Elle est alors sélectionnée pour passer six mois au Barefoot College, au Rajasthan. Avec vingt-six autres femmes venues du Burkina Faso, du Kenya, de Jordanie, toutes d'âge mûr, de milieu pauvre et sans qualification, elle va être formée à l'ingénierie solaire : circuits électroniques, soudure, cellules photovoltaïques... Un programme ambitieux pour des mères et des grands-mères qui, pour la plupart, ne savent ni lire ni écrire. Mais pourquoi les femmes ? Contrairement aux hommes qui quittent leur village une fois formés, elles mettent leurs connaissances et leurs ressources financières au service de la famille et de la communauté, explique Bunker Roy, le fondateur du Barefoot College. Mais la marche de Rafea vers l'indépendance économique et l'autonomie sociale se heurte au poids des traditions et aux réticences de son mari.

M2 Class: Nov 20: 1st Main Exam: Program of Revisions

The 1st Main Exam on Nov 20 will last around 75-80 minutes maximum and will cover:

    2/ Phrasal Verbs: Unit 145, 144 and 143

- Vocabulary and False friends: the same program as on Nov 09 (see previous note)
- Gram (in translation): from Unit 26 to 31 included 
- Reading comprehension: there will be an unknown text with questions
- Listening Comprehension: you will hear extracts twice only from "Cartoons Coverage" and you will have to write a short commentary on these extracts

Attendance rules for all HCEAI students (M1 and M2 sections)

Attendance is compulsory for those who are in "contrôle continu": if you are absent 3 times (ie 2+1) for unjustified reasons, if you cannot provide me with a valid and sincere justification, you will be automatically registered in "contrôle final".

Those of you who would like to be in "contrôle final", I recommend that you come and talk to me about this at the end or at the beginning of a class or send me an email about this as soon as possible
 
In "contrôle continu", in case you fail to be present at one of the two main exam sessions, you will be automatically registered in "contrôle final" even if you have a valid and sincere justification.
In "contrôle continu", if you have no valid and sincere justification for your possible absence for the short tests and quizzes that will also take place during the semester, you will get a zero.
There will be no catch-up session whatsoever, even if you have a valid and sincere justification.
 
All my students are required to check this website on a regular basis (at least twice a week) and before coming to class.

Dear students, 

Last Friday, I forgot to give you the transcript of the next report we are going to work on which is from the BBC World Service and titled "The Brain Drain from Africa". Please prepare it for next Friday (April 06). The copies of the transcript were given and distributed at Mrs THOM's class today. If, for one reason or another, you did not get it, you can always retrieve it from this blog. Listen carefully and several times, check the vocabulary and start learning it.

As said last Friday, there will be a short vocab test (20 minutes maximum) on April 13. It will count for 15% of the continuous assessment grade.

The short vocab test on April 13 will cover:
  • Vocabulary:
    • audio reports: Aborigines in Australia / PBS Muslims / Tony Blair and Slavery / The Brain Drain from Africa
    • three articles: Taseer / Said / Sen
Reminders: 
  • make sure you arrive on time or in advance as there will be no catch-up session whatsoever even if you have a valid reason.  
  • Second main exam which will also be the Final Exam for those students in this case: May 18
  • Second Short Vocab test: May 25. There will be "bonus" questions (extra points) based on the vocab lists (Chapters 50, 51 and 52).
